All students at Fireside Elementary will receive lessons from both their classroom teachers and myself as part of our social emotional and academic development curriculum. The programs we use at Fireside Elementary are In Focus and Zones of Regulation.
Classroom teachers will deliver these daily 10 minute lessons. There are three main parts all the lessons focus on: 1) Creating safety, security, and connection in the classroom 2) Identifying, controlling and expressing emotions 3) Focusing, managing, and harnessing emotions to enhance learning.
The Zones is a systematic, cognitive behavioral approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones. The Zones framework provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs, and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts.
Small group and individual counseling will also be part of the school counseling program delivery model. Students may be in small groups focused on developing social skills, anger management, family changes, grief and many more possible topics. If your child is recommended for a small group, parents and guardians will be contacted prior to participation. Parents and guardians can also refer their child to the counselor for small group or individual counseling. The intention of the small group and individual counseling sessions is to develop the skills necessary to navigate the students situation. If more intense longer term counseling is necessary, families will be contacted to discuss the possibility of other counseling supports and referral options.
